The new Johnson County Courthouse in downtown Olathe, Kansas, was built as a replacement to the city’s old courthouse, which dated back to 1952. Blending innovative modern architecture with more traditional elements, the 21st century facility by Treanor pays homage to the region’s history while integrating flexible, sustainable design details that ensure efficient circulation, incorporate advanced technology, and include enhanced security features. Outside of the Courthouse’s main entrance is Johnson County Square—a public plaza and green space developed as part of the project with Landworks Studio. Located between the Courthouse and the Johnson County Administration Building, the Square creates a focal point for the greater downtown area and plays host to art festivals, concerts and other events. A coordinated mix of F+S security bollards and site furnishings align with the setting’s clean aesthetic and add to the welcoming feel of the outdoor spaces.
