A new state-of-the-art public library recently opened in downtown Olathe, a diverse and growing community in the Kansas City metro area. In planning the project, the City of Olathe sought to make the new library a destination—a place where people can gather, relax, focus, and, of course, read. Inspired by Olathe’s history, the new library looks toward the future and is nearly twice as big as the one it replaced. Its design celebrates the idea of creating community while simultaneously being at the edge of exploration, a nod to Olathe being a historical gathering point for those choosing to embark on the Santa Fe or Oregon Trails. Indoors, the open concept design brings in abundant natural light and allows for flexible use of the interior spaces. Outdoors, the library reaches beyond the building with a park, an amphitheater, outdoor terraces, and multiple F+S products that invite library employees and visitors to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
