The Renaissance New York Harlem Hotel brings a historical perspective to the neighborhood of Harlem and connects hotel guests to the area’s rich cultural heritage. For the hotel’s elevator interiors, the goal of AJC Design was to create a theatrical experience for visitors as they ascend to the main hotel lobby. The elevator's wood floor created a stage effect, and the materials used for the walls provided a canvas for showcasing prominent Harlem Renaissance figures such as Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald. The iconic performers take center stage in glass panels surrounded by gold tones that align with the hotel’s aesthetic and offer an antique feel with a modern edge. Forms+Surfaces’ ability to bring the performers to life in customized ViviSpectra Spectrum glass, supply the Fused White Gold and custom woven metal, and bring all materials together within the LEVELe Elevator Interior System provided an overall solution for the design team. Completing the experience: F+S Elevator door skins in Fused Graphite and Fused White Gold serve as the stage “curtain” and align with the historical design theme.
